Summer internships are important learning experiences for journalism students, helping them to develop their skills in a real newsroom. These internship experiences are also crucial in helping these students land jobs in the field after they graduate. However, most of these internships are unpaid.
Students who do unpaid summer internships are required to pay tuition for academic credit, which can range from $500 to $1,500 for the summer term. Financial aid isn’t available in summer, so they can be financially strapped if they relocate to an expensive city or even if they stay in Tucson. Additionally, students may have to reduce their hours at paid summer jobs to accommodate the hours required at the unpaid internship.
The money raised from this crowd-funding campaign will help these hard-working students pay tuition and living expenses during their unpaid summer internships. Completing an internship increases a student’s chances of finding a job after graduation. This funding can make a difference between whether a student can accept an unpaid internship—or not.
