Help HAS Build a Modern Collaborative Learning Space

This campaign has concluded, but if you would still like to make a gift to support the Department of Hydrology & Atmospheric Sciences, please click here

The international recognition of the University of Arizona Department of Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences as a world leader in water studies, as well as the caliber of our students and faculty, is exceptional. However, our physical classroom spaces have not been maintained at a level befitting of this prominence.

Recently, the UA's Provost Office awarded us a $50,000 grant to initiate a much-needed renovation of Room 110 in the John W. Harshbarger Building. The ISLE grant, which supports Innovative Spaces for Learning and Engagement, requires matching funds from alumni and friends like you to bring the project to fruition.

The renovation of Room 110 would have a significant impact, allowing us to:

  • Recruit and retain top students and top faculty members. Located in a prominent space on the first floor of the Harshbarger Building, Room 110 is highly visible for prospective students and faculty members. Let's give them a space in which they will be excited to learn and to teach.

  • Embrace a global learning style for current undergraduate and graduate students. For the upcoming semester, a projected 70 percent of all HAS classes could utilize this space if it were renovated. HAS faculty members have made a unanimous commitment to learning and applying collaborative pedagogical techniques that the renovated room would facilitate. A global learning style will better engage students by making them active learners, providing immediate feedback about their understanding of the material, and encouraging them to collaborate and communicate with the instructor and their peers.

  • Better prepare our students to make an impact after UA. As professionals, our students will be expected to be capable and comfortable working in integrated team environments. Modern collaborative learning spaces facilitate the crucial leadership and communication skills that will make our students successful in these teams.

To emphasize our own commitment to the opportunity for a modern collaborative learning space, all gifts will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $25,000 by the Department of Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences. That means your gift will have twice the impact!

We hope you'll join us in making this vision a reality! Please consider a gift of any size today.

$25

Gifts of Any Size

With your gift of any size, we will be one step closer to re-imagining student learning in Harshbarger Room 110. Join us!

$50

Call to Action

Gifts of $50 or more will help us answer the call to action from the UA Provost's Office. Thanks to the $50,000 ISLE grant, we're half way to raising funds for the proposed renovations, but the grant is incumbent upon alumni and friends raising the remaining amount.

$100

Visual Appeal

Gifts of $100 or more will allow us to paint and re-plaster the 900 square foot space. Creating greater visual appeal in a high foot traffic area will also impact prospective students, faculty, and visitors coming for outreach education or professional training activities.

$250

Student Impact

Gifts of $250 or more will help us create, for the Fall 2019 semester alone, about 250 undergraduate seats (243 to be exact!) and 168 graduate seats in classes that will be more engaging and more effective because of the global learning facilitated by a modern collaborative learning space.

$500

Adaptable Furniture

Gifts of $500 or more will allow us to purchase specialized and adaptable furniture that will require students to face one another, encouraging engagement with their peers, and will require the instructor to move, engaging with each table group of students around the room.

$1,000

High-Definition Interaction

Gifts of $1,000 or more will allow us to purchase the high tech computers and four high-definition screens that will compel students to interact seamlessly with the material, the instructor and their peers.

$2,500

HAS Champions

Donors who give $2,500 or more to this project will be acknowledged on a plaque in JW Harshbarger Room 110 for their dedication to recruitment and retention of top-notch HAS students and faculty, improved student learning and department collaboration, and increased impact in solving our world's water challenges.
