Global Health Interest Group - Dominican Republic, Summer 2017

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC MEDICAL SERVICE TRIP

For the 6th year in a row, the University of Arizona College of Medicine-Phoenix Global Health program is organizing two medical trips to the Dominican Republic. This May, 16 medical students and four faculty will travel to the Dominican Republic to provide health care to more than 100 patients each day in rural communities. We will stay at the Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos (NPH) orphanage and travel to four different farming villages, or bateys, to set up mobile clinics in community buildings and backyards.

At the mobile clinics, we will take vitals including blood pressure, pulse, temperature as well as patient histories, perform physical exams and dispense medications in the pharmacy. We will also conduct home visit in order to care for patients who are unable to travel to the clinic.

This trip will help us learn ways to improve the health and access to healthcare in the international community and to collaborate with the international community to reduce health disparities and inequities while providing student opportunities to gain experience in global health.

HOW YOUR GIFT MAKES A DIFFERENCE

Students traveling to the Dominican Republic must pay for their own travel. Your support will help to assist the students and cover room and board, meals and other costs for students and faculty.

By helping to provide the necessities, you not only support us, but also the people within the farming communities.

Please consider making a gift today to support these important goals:

  1. Help fulfill our mission of creating a future community of culturally competent physicians who look to serve others outside our national borders.

  2. Provide underserved communities in the Dominican Republic with necessary medical care.

Thank you for your support!

GLOBAL HEALTH INTEREST GROUP

The Global Health Interest Group is a group within the Global Health Program made up entirely of College of Medicine-Phoenix students (UACOMP). Our Global Health Program exposes students to real life and, at times, primitive clinical and public health care due to the resource constraints typically found in developing nations. We have the opportunity to apply their medical knowledge to health care situations around the world, and to learn from colleagues and experts abroad in the fields of tropical medicine, nutrition and public health.

Our mission is to:

  • Collaborate with the international community to reduce health disparities and inequities, while providing student opportunities to gain experience in global health.

  • Create a future community of culturally competent physicians with a desire to serve others that transcends national borders.
