The Power of Adaptive Athletics

December 18, 2018

Our program provides an avenue for athletes to achieve athletic and educational excellence. The skills our athletes learn go far beyond any court or field.

"As I continue my journey through the world of adaptive athletics, I continue to learn things about myself that otherwise would have gone undiscovered. It has instilled a sense of unshakable self confidence that did not previously exist. While it has allowed me to flourish, adaptive athletics has also humbled me in ways I couldn’t imagine. It has opened up opportunities to build camaraderie and leadership qualities, all the while enjoying every step of the way." - Amen Alyasiry, Men's Wheelchair Basketball athlete and current UA student

Your contribution is making a difference. Thank you!!

18 days left with less than halfway to go!

December 10, 2018

We are in week three of our campaign with less than halfway to go! Thank you to all who have donated and shared our campaign. Your gift will pay for an athlete's equipment costs for both their sports chair and everyday chair. Please continue to share our campaign to your family, friends and professional networks to help us reach our goal of $8,000.

Read about the power of our program through Alumnus and Veteran Jeff Odom:

After my accident, part of my recovery plan was to get involved in the UA Adaptive Athletic Program at the Disability Resource Center. I didn't know what to expect when I thought about competing after my accident. I just wasn't sure how athletic my 'new' body would allow me to be. I was amazed the first time I saw the Quad-Rugby team play. It is a very fast hard-hitting sport! I was very nervous starting out, but as I progressed I realized that I had the potential to become a competitive athlete once again. It also gave me the motivation and the opportunity to finish getting my degree.

Let's keep it going!

November 27, 2018

We are in the second week of our campaign with a little over four weeks left to reach our goal. Thank you to everyone who has donated and shared our campaign so far. Here's a message from current Wheelchair Rugby Player and UA Alumnus Eric Bell:

“It would be hard to overstate how much the UA Adaptive Athletics Program has impacted my life as an athlete and a student. I moved to Tucson in 2014 from Seattle, WA to pursue a master’s degree in public administration after being recruited by Bryan Barten, the wheelchair rugby coach at the time.

In the four years since, I have successfully completed my degree with a concentration in nonprofit management, I have landed an incredible job at UA ensuring physical access for people with disabilities throughout Campus, and this past year won the US Wheelchair Rugby National Championship with my Wildcat teammates. The Adaptive Athletics Program is the driving force behind everything I have accomplished in my time here, and it has positively impacted almost every aspect of my life. My development as an athlete, a professional, and most importantly as a person would not have been possible without the support of the UA Adaptive Athletics program.

In the future I have aspirations of obtaining elected office and continuing to fight for a right to access for people with disabilities. I can thank the University of Arizona and Adaptive Athletics for affording me that opportunity.”

Our rugby team took home the 2018 National Championship for the first time in our program's history. We hope to keep the title home again this season. Bear Down!
