Final Update - SEA Crowdfunding

April 03, 2019

To the Supporting SEA Community:

On behalf of the 2019 Summer Engineering Academy Staff, we have officially raised 112% of our $5,000 goal! It is solely thanks to your generosity that we can provide need-based scholarships to high school students and enable them to spend a week at the University of Arizona immersed in our engineering camp!

I am so humbled to lead this wonderful program. This is our second year utilizing this platform for financial support and I am again reminded what an impact the Summer Engineering Academy has had on past students, families, colleagues, and friends everywhere. Out staff is committed to improving and innovating this camp every year while keeping it accessible, educational, and fun for all.

As stated in the campaign, we were raising funds for need-based scholarship awards for students yearning to attend SEA from all over our local community and the country. We will begin soon awarding deserving students funds for them to spend a week in Tucson with us over the summer!

Please keep in touch with us throughout the summer and beyond!

Follow us on Facebook and on Instagram at @summerengineeringacademy. We post updates and photos throughout the summer. This is a fantastic way to see what the campers you helped support are up to!

As always, shoot us an email or visit our website for all updates and information about the Summer Engineering Academy.

Once again – thank you for your contribution. I am very excited for our first day of camp on June 9!

Sincerely,

Lori Huggins,

46% Raised!!

March 22, 2019

We are very excited that we are nearing the 50% mark with ten days left! We have had several people give to our fund in last couple of days and even the last couple of hours! We appreciate your donations and can not wait to award them to students in April. Our scholarship applications are rolling in. We have already received over 20 applications and are getting more everyday. The scholarship application is due April 1st and we hope to meet our goal of raising $5,000 to give as many of the applicants scholarships as possible.

For those of you who have donated already --- thank you so much. Please share this with your friends and family who also understand the importance of students finding their love for engineering early on so they are successful in college and beyond.

If you have not yet donated, help us meet this goal and make a dynamic difference in the lives of the students who are able to attend SEA!

BEAR DOWN!!!

Meet our Co-Assistant Head Counselors

March 14, 2019

I would like to introduce our 2019 co-head assistant head counselors who are both returning to SEA staff for the second year in a row. They are very excited to help our campers learn more about engineering.

CO-ASSISTANT HEAD COUNSELOR: Monique Martinez

Hello, everyone! My name is Monique Martinez and I will be the co-assistant head counselor this year for SEA. I was born and raised in Tucson, Arizona, and I’m excited to be finishing up my sophomore year at the UA. I am currently majoring in biomedical engineering (biomaterials track) with minors in math, biochemistry, and art history. I have been involved in orthopedic research at the Banner – University Medical Center and in campus clubs such as MathCats, the Society of Women Engineers, and Engineering Ambassadors. Throughout my time at UA, I have been able to spread my passion for math, science, and engineering to prospective, incoming, and current students. This past summer, I was a counselor for SEA and I’m beyond excited to once again be working with such an amazing program. SEA provides me the perfect opportunity to educate students about engineering and encourage them to continue to explore the field no matter where they pursue higher education. My favorite memory from last year at SEA would have to be helping the campers build their own infinity light boxes during the “Optical Engineering” activity. After finishing their project, the campers were so proud to have built the light box from its basic components, and it was so fun for me personally to help them finish and watch as their faces lit up when they plugged in the box for the first time.

CO-ASSISTANT HEAD COUNSELOR: Ryan Amos

Hello! My name is Ryan Amos and I will be one of the co-assistant head counselors for 2019’s Summer Engineering Academy. I grew up in the small town of Kearny, Arizona and I will be going into my junior year this upcoming fall. I’m majoring in mining engineering in the sustainable resource development track and looking into a minor in mathematics. I am a member of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, & Exploration and hope to be joining the Engineering Ambassadors this upcoming year. Last summer, I was a counselor for SEA. It was an exciting learning experience not only for campers but for me and my fellow counselors, as well. One of my favorite memories from last summer’s camp was helping campers run chem-cars. By using the power from a chemical reaction, campers were competing to make their cars go the furthest and fastest. The best part was when the cars flew off the track and on multiple occasions managed to find their way into a tree. I’m excited to be able to come back again this summer and use my knowledge from the previous camp to lead and make this summer even more enjoyable than before. I’m hoping by the end of camp that every camper has a better understanding of engineering and of what they would like to study in their college years to come.

Monique and Ryan wait to meet the high school students who get to to to camp through money raised through this campaign. Please help us reach more students by donating today or by sharing this with friends.

Summer Engineering Academy Leadership 2019

March 12, 2019

Hello, Summer Engineering Academy (SEA) supporters! We are off to a great start for our SEA Scholarship Crowdfunding Campaign. We want to sincerely thank you for your contributions thus far; please consider sharing our crowdfunding effort with others that share your love of engineering and higher education!

We are very excited about our 2019 Camp! I would like to share with you our camp leadership for this summer. Our leadership team is comprised of thee undergraduate engineering students: a Head-Counselor, and two Co-Assistant Head Counselors. All three of these students is returning to SEA for a second summer because of their great experience with our campers last year. Check out Clare, our head counselor's story below.

HEAD COUNSELOR: Clare Cronin

Hi, all! My name is Clare Cronin and I am going to be the head counselor for SEA! I was born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona and am finishing my junior year at the UA. I am majoring in materials science and engineering, specializing in metallurgy, with minors in mining engineering and math. On campus, I am involved with Engineering Ambassadors, the Materials Advantage Club (an outreach club for materials science and engineering), and participate in intramural sports. Last summer I worked as a counselor at the Summer Engineering Academy and I could not be more excited about returning this summer. I attended the Summer Engineering Academy during high school and it became the reason I decided to pursue engineering at the University of Arizona. I am excited to continue to share that experience with students this summer. My favorite memory last summer was the cardboard canoe challenge. The students were testing all their canoes and one started to sink so some of the other team members started to carry their boat across the pool. It was a great show of support and teamwork as well as having tons of fun, which is what camp is really about.

We want any high school student who is interested in engineering, math, or science to be able to come to our camp and the funds raised for these scholarships will help make that possible. Support & Share our Crowdfunding Campaign so we can continue to provide an amazing experience for all.

Thank you, and Bear Down!
