For nearly 30 years, “Mr. C.” or “J.G.” helped launch the careers of hundreds of journalists and students who went into law, education, business and other fields. Not only did he teach students how to write concise sentences — he'd put up sentences on the blackboard and challenge the class: “Parse that baby!” — he also instilled the values of objectivity, critical thinking, reading, communication and esprit de corps. The weekly newspaper he advised at Tucson’s Catalina High School, The Trumpeteer, continually won national awards.
To honor Mr. Carlton, who died in 2015, this endowed fund was established to provide special scholarships for undergraduate students enrolled in the journalism major at the University of Arizona. Preference will be given to a student who works for the Arizona Daily Wildcat, UATV-3 or KAMP Student Radio — newsrooms that, much like The Trumpeteer under Mr. C., double as a learning laboratory and a second home for many students.
