Astronomy International Study Abroad

Siding Springs Observatory

The Department of Astronomy and the Steward Observatory have grown in size, breadth, and quality since their founding in 1918. A number of UA students and alumni have made wonderful discoveries. One of the most well-known is the discovery by Brian P. Schmidt, and his colleagues, of the accelerating expansion of the Universe, for which he shared the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics.

We are pleased to announce a new phase in the evolution of our undergraduate astronomy program. Starting in the fall of 2016, juniors and seniors will have the opportunity to study abroad for a semester at the Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra, which is under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Brian Schmidt (BS Astronomy, 1989).

You have the opportunity to support this exceptional program by giving to the Astronomy International Study Abroad Program. With a gift today, you help promising students for whom the cost of travel, housing, and related expenses would otherwise make participation in this new exchange program with ANU difficult or impossible.

You will give these students a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. A gift today will also help strengthen our program and ensure the UA continues to attract top astronomy candidates.

Students are applying now for the fall semester, and we look forward to announcing the future astronomers who, with your help, will have the chance to gain knowledge and inspiration from a prominent scientist who began at the University of Arizona!
