Hello friends of New Start!
Our apologies that in busy-ness of the end of the program, we have not provided our final update - the scholarship winners! Below are the winners of the three categories along with the title of their projects. Thank you so much for helping us add scholarships to their recognition!
Best Research: How Sexuality Makes us Whole Elizabeth Quinlan Ashley Long Kaitlyn Lavalley
Best Innovation: Themes of Music Ariana Hardin Alexis Potter
Best Creativity: The Puzzle of Health Austin Vail Sterling Leverett Elias Ramirez-Moreno
Dear donors,
Thank you so much for supporting the New Start Summer Program in our campaign to raise funds for scholarships for the Academic Conference. We made our goal and subsequently have a matching donation of $4,500, more than doubling that goal.
Awards will be made at the New Start Awards Ceremony next Friday, July 22, at 11:00am. It will be held in Social Sciences 100, so if you are in Tucson you are welcome to stop by! We will also post an additional update here to announce those winners.
Because we were able to receive a donation match from the Dorrance Scholarships Program, we will be able to offer $1,000 scholarships instead of the $500 from our original goal. Those scholarships will go to students in the three panels that win our Best Research, Best Creativity, and Best Innovation awards to help them cover the costs of their freshman year.
On behalf of the 118 students who presented at the conference, thank you for your support!
In gratitude,
Tom Murray, Program Director
Dear friends,
Thank you so much for the support you have shown New Start over the last month. I am happy to report that WE MADE IT!!! We have now exceeded our goal of $4,500 which means that our original goal will be matched by the Dorrance Scholarships Program, giving us over $9,000 to award in scholarships this year. As the 24th Annual Academic Conference is about to get started in just a few hours, I wanted to take this opportunity to say THANK YOU!!
In gratitude,
Tom Murray
PS Stay tuned for a list of scholarship winners and their research topics - to be announced on July 22 at the Awards Ceremony!
Thank you to everyone who has supported us so far!
Now, each gift is TWICE as important! The Dorrance Scholarships Program has generously offered to match every dollar we raise up to our goal of $4,500! That means if we hit our goal we will actually have $9,000 to award to students!
If you have already donated - thank you! Please help us spread the word so we can hit our goal!
Bear Down from the Start!

Dear friends of New Start,
Today is the official Student Welcome for #UANewStart2016 (take a look at all of these smiling faces!) and New Start has already raised over 25% of their goal - just two days into the campaign! When I was considering my gift to New Start, I knew I wanted the amount itself to mean something. I chose to give a gift that reflects the year I went through New Start myself – 1990. New Start is what provided my foundation at the University of Arizona – a foundation that led to an amazing career at the school that I love. Thank you so much for your support for New Start and let’s keep the momentum going to make sure New Start hits its goal! Bear Down from the Start!

Last year, 10 students total (from three panels) won an award at the Academic Conference. Your gift will help us add scholarships to the awards for the students who win this year!
The New Start Academic Conference began in 1993 as a way to introduce students to life at a Research I institution and to get them to consider themselves a part of that academic life.
This year, New Start will host its 24th Annual Academic Conference!
Last year, the Academic Conference hosted 36 sessions across two days of the conference. Scholarships will help us provide a reward for students who go above and beyond making their session excellent!
89.10% of New Start 2014 was retained to their sophomore year! Each year, New Start retains students at a rate higher than the student body at large!
At the 2015 Academic Conference, 138 students presented as a part of a panel - that's almost half of the students in New Start!
