Help us continue growing the next generation of environmental scientists, educators, and leaders committed to diversity.
The Bio/Diversity Project works to foster more diverse and inclusive environmental fields and environmental organizations by creating a K-16+ and into the workforce pipeline that expands access to education, training, mentorship, and paid work experience.
Each year, we recruit University of Arizona students from groups traditionally underrepresented in the environmental sciences and train them to serve as environmental science outreach educators in local K-12 schools. Over the course of a semester, interns receive training on developing hands-on and culturally-responsive environmental science lessons and then implement these lessons in local Title I schools. In doing so, we expand access to culturally responsive and place-based environmental science programming, while also exposing K-12 students to a diverse set of college-going mentors and role models.

During their internship experience, university students participate in trainings and networking events with local environmental science organizations, enabling them to build career readiness skills and the professional networks necessary to enter and succeed in the environmental fields. Upon completion of the internship experience, students have the opportunity to apply for paid positions with partner organizations to gain additional skills and work experience.
During the 2020-2021 academic year, The Bio/Diversity Project pivoted all of our programming to be conducted 100% online.

The pivot to online teaching has brought many challenges, but it also brought a myriad of opportunities for us and our cohort of interns. Our interns led the way in creating lessons through a variety of digital platforms that brought engagement to the online classroom in ways previously unexplored. They gained competency in various on-line platforms, improved their science communication skills, and found unique ways to engage students and inspire them to explore their natural environment. They even utilized the ArcGIS and the StoryMaps platform to create collaborative digital stories of the natural world with their students. Check out the Spring 2021 Action Projects by Clicking Here!
Give today to help us return to the classroom and continue doing this important work!
While our experiment in 100% remote engagement went well, we are thrilled to be returning to in-person and hands-on learning in the fall! Any funds procured through this crowdfunding campaign will tremendously help us return to the classroom and continue doing this important work.
