30 Days of Giving for 60 Years of SIE!

Celebrate 60 years of the Systems & Industrial Engineering (SIE) program in the College of Engineering at the University of Arizona by making a gift today! In honor of our 60th Anniversary, we are asking all SIE Alumni and supporters to give to scholarships which will be awarded to historically underrepresented students in STEM. Our goal is to build a giving culture that continues to mentor and support our students annually. SIE's intention is to bridge barriers by creating a community of inclusivity, equity and diversity in STEM.

History of the Department

The University of Arizona Department of Systems and Industrial Engineering was established in 1961 as the nation's first academic department of systems engineering. Our department's founder, A. Wayne Wymore, wrote the book on model-based systems engineering! Our department offers four academic programs in systems engineering, industrial engineering, engineering management and software engineering.

SIE works with other departments such as Management Information Systems in the Eller College of Management and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering to offer collaborative programs.

What's New at SIE?

  • New interim Department Head, Dr. Ricardo Valerdi
  • SIE continues to grow with partnerships with international universities to provide dual degree undergraduate/AMP program in our micro campuses in Peru & undergraduate program in Indonesia, as well as a graduate micro campus program in Jordan
  • SIE houses the college's newest major, Software Engineering
  • Three new faculty members: Dr. Alejandro Salado, Diana Saldana and Dr. Pratik Satam

I would like to personally say thank you to my scholarship donor for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to attend a prestigious university with financial security. Coming from a low income, immigrant family as a first generation student, being able to have my education paid for is something beyond what I ever imagined for myself. My parents left their life in Mexico to give me a chance at a better one and getting my education paid for is the best way I know how to repay them. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, to all the donors that don’t know how much their help means to me.

I never thought I would pursue anything more than a bachelor's degree (especially getting all four years and my AMP year paid for). This is more than what my parents ever imagined for us when they left Mexico - fully paid is unheard of, helping me become a version of me that my younger self would have been proud to look up to, opening the door to Latinas in STEM, and relief of financial strain on my family since I am the 4th child to go to college.

As a community college transfer student, scholarships have impacted my academics and life in more ways than I could've imagined. They relieved stress, resulting in higher motivation in class and Dean's List awards. They helped give me stability in order to stop working nights and be a more present mom at home. They allowed me time to focus on finally finding an internship in engineering, and then a co-op as well. They motivated me knowing I had people believing in me, even in the harder times where I felt like giving up.

I am forever grateful for the scholarships I received as a student since it allowed me to continue my studies and graduate as a first-generation Latina in STEM. Growing up in a low-income family, the idea of college seemed a bit extreme but it was the ultimate goal. My parents provided to the best of their ability; however, having financial aid removed a huge burden that opened a door for many other opportunities. Now that I have graduated, I like to give back to the community that believed in me and helped me out in times I needed it the most. Every donation and contribution truly can impact the lives of students significantly.

$20

SIE Groupie

I love GROUPIES, every gift makes a difference. This would help our students buy some groceries along with assistance from the UA Campus Pantry.

$60

SIE Supporter

As a SUPPORTER, you can help a student like Kasey stop working nights and be a more present mom at home. Knowing that people believe in them motivates them through the difficult times. This can enable our SIE students to start focusing on finding internships and gaining valuable experience.

$600

SIE Champion

You will be a CHAMPION with your donation! This can open so many possibilities for first generation students, Latinas and other underrepresented groups in STEM. These new scholarships will help us support the UA's mission as a Hispanic Serving Institution.

$6,000

SIE Game Changer

This would be a GAME CHANGER and award six undergraduate students $1,000 each in scholarships. With your help, imagine how many more SIE students we can support and relieve some of their financial stressors!
