My feelings towards my white coat have changed as I have grown in my medical education. The first time I wore it, I felt out of place and was very nervous. As my education continued, the feeling transformed from nervousness to excitement. Wearing it meant I had the opportunity to learn clinical skills and interact with patients.
Looking back now, I realize that my white coat bears witness to my journey over the past two years. Ink stains, coffee spills, and wrinkles serve as reminders of challenging days. Despite its worn appearance at times, each frayed corner represents a challenge I have been fortunate enough to overcome.
White coat...you may not appear as pristine today as you did during the white coat ceremony when I first wore you, but I appreciate you more now, weathered and well-used than I did two years ago. Thank you for everything you have taught me and will continue to teach me.
Your generous gift to this year’s White Coat Campaign will provide the white coat and stethoscope that a student like me will wear throughout their training.

Thank you,

Shannon Alsobrooks, Class of 2025
The journey to the white coat, is really what makes it so special. Like an anchor, it is a constant fixture that keeps me grounded and encouraged.
To put it into perspective, it took me four years, a master’s degree, EMT certification, two (almost three MCAT exams), two application cycles and over 60 applications to earn my spot. These past two years in medical school, I have grown so much, and I have learned to adapt to whatever comes my way. My white coat is something that never changes, it has been with me through it all. From doctoring sessions as an MS1 to community clinical experiences as an MS2 to clerkships as an MS3 and soon away rotations as an MS4.
I am a current 3rd-year medical student and am a recipient of a four-year military scholarship, under which I was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. In exchange for my scholarship, I will incur a service commitment upon completion of residency. I am a first-generation college student, originally from Southern Maryland. I completed a Master of Science at Drexel University and a Bachelor of Science at Appalachian State University.
Your generous gift to this year’s White Coat Campaign will provide the white coat and stethoscope that a student like me will wear throughout their training.
