Since the April launch of the Malcolm Hughes Endowment for Outreach in honor of Malcolm’s accomplishments and in celebration of his retirement, the fund has raised over $25,000. The LTRR Outreach program has also been very busy over this time with ongoing and new activities as well as planning for the future.
Outreach Program Fall Highlights:
- In 2023, as of October, the Outreach Program has engaged with over 3,000 students and community members through our PreK-12 and Undergraduate programming, and Community Engagement.
- We initiated a program to increase early childhood scientific literacy in collaboration with the Pima County Public Library.
- We hosted 45 students from Mexico at the annual ‘Women in STEM’ conference with our colleagues from Latin American Programs International Education, part of the University of Arizona Mexico Initiatives.
- We provided a tour for attendees of the Association for Undergraduate Education at Research Universities (UERU) National Conference who learned about undergraduate research opportunities at the LTRR.
- We supported ‘Queerd Science,’ an event to highlight the contributions and roles of LGBTQ practitioners in STEM at the University of Arizona.

With your help, the Endowment will grow to sustainably support new program development and staff to help carry out a programmatic expansion.
In particular we look forward to:
- Supporting an undergraduate Outreach Assistant, providing both research and practical experience for the student who will interact with a variety of audiences.
- Expansion of the docent program with training opportunities to build content knowledge and science communication skills.
- Support our PreK-12 portable classroom visits and field classes, including funding for transportation to field sites.
- Developing new teaching materials for hands-on, inquiry-based outreach kits for our traveling outreach team and for teachers to use in their classrooms.
