New Start 2025 concluded on Friday morning with our annual closing ceremony in ENR2, and it was a beautiful time to celebrate our students' accomplishments throughout the summer. We were also thrilled to announce the 4 winning groups for excellence at the New Start Conference. 

For Excellence in Research: 

ICE: The Human Costs of Immigration Enforcement (presented by Haydn Rae, Miranda Badilla-Guerrero, and Isabella Boettcher)

For Excellence in Analysis:

The Importance of Access to Bilingual Education and Healthcare (presented by Marianna Martinez, Ailyn Gamez, and Brianna Campos Tapia)

For Excellence in Creativity:

The Echo of a Click: Privacy, Polarization, and the Internet (presented by Myah Herrera, Zoey Puente, and Areli Sahagun)

For Excellence in Teamwork:

Health Animals, Safer Shelters (presented by Jazlynn Do Le and Aracely Cazares)

These 11 students will each be awarded a book scholarship for the fall semester. This is possible thanks to you and the impact of our community! Every dollar, click, and share has contributed to a successful campaign, and rewarded our students in a tangible, meaningful way.

Thank you for contributing to a strong start to our annual crowdfunding campaign!

Time is flying quickly, and students are settling into their New Start routines. We have such an enthusiastic and lively group this year, and we can’t wait to see what they cook up for their New Start Conference presentations. In the last week, UA Library came to the students’ Friday lecture and led them in an interactive search, and they also had the chance to do a type of “scavenger hunt” throughout the Student Success District.

By now, every group has already met at least once with a Conference Coach to iron out their topics, with many already diving into resources and putting together outlines for their sessions. Topics range from bilingualism to financial wellness, and we can’t wait to see what Engineering Blast-Off puts together for their design projects.

So far we have met 41% of our fundraising goal, and we’re thrilled with the quick progress. We do still have some progress to make to reach our $5,000 goal by July 18. New Start’s power has always been in its community and collective spirit, so we hope that you will share with your networks and consider spreading the word.
