Support Huerta Scholars

Support the next generation of Indigenous lawyers!

The Huerta Scholarship provides vital support to Indigenous law students attending the University of Arizona College of Law. Indigenous students can realize their dreams of attending law school thanks to the support of Huerta Scholarship donors like you!

Established in 2014 in honor of Judge Lawrence Huerta — a proud member of the Pascua Yaqui Tribe and the first Native American graduate of University of Arizona Law (Class of ’53) — the Huerta Scholarship continues his legacy of breaking barriers and paving new paths for future generations.

Thanks to supporters like you, we have awarded 74 Indigenous law students with Huerta Scholarships, totaling $225,550 in Huerta Scholarship funding, helping students achieve their dreams of becoming Indigenous advocates, leaders and changemakers in their communities.

Last year, with your generosity we raised more than $50,000 to lift Indigenous voices in the legal profession. This Giving Tuesday (December 2, 2025), our goal is to raise $52,500 — and we can’t do it without you.

Your gift today fuels Indigenous self-determination, honors Indigenous heritage and changes lives.

Together, let’s continue Judge Huerta’s legacy and support the next generation of Indigenous lawyers. Invest in the success of Indigenous law students by donating to the Huerta Scholarship!

Matching Gift Challenge

Thanks to the generosity of Deborah Sliz (’79) and Alan Yando, your donations will be doubled now through December 2, up to $5,000 total, for our matching gift challenge. Double the impact of your gift by participating in our matching gift challenge!

Judge Huerta's Legacy

The Honorable Carrasco Lawrence Huerta (Class of ’53) passed away on May 25, 2022, at the age of 97 — leaving behind a legacy of service that continues to shape Indigenous communities and the legal profession today.

A proud member of the Pascua Yaqui Tribe, Judge Huerta dedicated his life to advancing education, justice and tribal sovereignty. As chancellor of Navajo Community College (now Diné College), he expanded educational opportunities across the Navajo Nation, helping to build one of the first institutions of higher learning created by and for Indigenous people.

Description automatically generatedJudge Huerta’s leadership was instrumental in drafting the Pascua Yaqui Tribe’s constitution and securing federal recognition for the tribe — achievements that helped transform the Pascua Yaqui Nation into one of the strongest tribal governments and court systems in the country.

His lifetime of service included roles as Assistant Attorney General, member of the State Industrial Commission and Judge on the Maricopa County Superior Court. In 2015, the University of Arizona Law honored him with its Lifetime Achievement Award, the college’s highest recognition, celebrating his enduring impact on law, justice and community empowerment.

Judge Huerta’s life reminds us that leadership is service — and that every act of opportunity we create strengthens generations to come.

Honor his legacy by empowering the next generation of Indigenous lawyers by donating to the Huerta Scholarship.

Together, we can continue his life’s work — building justice, uplifting communities and shaping a more equitable future.
