In 2001, Fred Cox, a 1997 University of Arizona and McGuire alum with a degree in Entrepreneurship, was a successful 27-year-old young man working as an investment banker at Sandler O’Neill & Partners on Wall Street. Fred was living out his dream when he tragically died during the attacks on 9/11.
Entrepreneurship is a state of mind—a constitutional spirit—as much as it is a business practice or process. As we know, there are many highs and lows in this line of work, but to be successful as an entrepreneur, the spirit we embody is of significant importance. You are born with that. The University of Arizona’s Eller College and The McGuire Center for Entrepreneurship hone that spirit and fortify it with a world-class education.
Fred Cox embodied the spirit of an entrepreneur. He was courageous, diligent, committed, enthusiastic, energetic, resourceful, charismatic, creative, independent and accountable. The recipients of The Fred Cox Memorial Scholarship are of the same fabric and mettle, but they need our help to fulfill their innate ability.
It is with great pleasure I am part of a team leading the effort to assist these students, and honor Fred’s legacy and spirit for which he was so widely regarded through a scholastic endowment. As my college roommate, I know firsthand his energy, his sincerity as a friend and the pride he held in his work and in being an alumnus of the U of A. I ask that you consider joining us to support these qualities, this man, the Eller College, our University and the students who are the true beneficiaries of this gift. Thank you so much, and as always, BEAR DOWN.
Sincerely yours,
Gene Kansas BS in Entrepreneurship '95
HELP US BUILD THE ENDOWMENT
Friends and family remember Fred as passionate, hardworking, and relentless. To honor Fred’s life and entrepreneurial spirit, the Eller College of Management’s McGuire Center for Entrepreneurship is pleased to announce an initiative to create an endowment for The Fred Cox Memorial Scholarship. This endowed scholarship will benefit McGuire students who exude the same passionate qualities as Fred, and like him, are unwavering in their dedication to succeed in business.
In order to honor Fred in perpetuity, the goal is for the endowment to reach $100,000 as soon as possible. The endowment will produce an annual payout which will provide support for students year after year. This will help them tremendously as they pursue their academic and career goals. All gifts towards the Fred Cox Memorial Endowed Scholarship are 100% tax deductible.
