August 02, 2018

Greetings donors!

I apologize for the lateness of this final update, but the closing of New Start is a very chaotic time for us! As you know, we had an ambitious goal this year, trying to raise twice as much money for our scholarships because of our lack of matching donation. While we did not make that ambitious goal, we did raise more through the actual crowdfunding campaign than we have in the past. Thank you so much for making this such a success!

The Academic Conference was also an incredible success…hopefully you were able to see some of the sessions that were streamed on Facebook Live. If not, the videos are still available on our Facebook page. Over the course of two days, over 375 students presented in 127 panels that spanned eight different conference sessions. As a part of the process of preparing for and participating in the conference, our students were able to practice many of the skills they learned about in their Topics in Leadership class: time management, working in groups, communication, prioritization, public speaking, and giving and receiving feedback. Such a great learning experience for all of them!

And, as you know, we selected three of those panels to receive our awards that include the scholarships to which you so generously contributed. So, without further ado, the winners of the Academic Conference awards were…

Best Research

“What’s Getting Between You and Your Education: The Societal, Physical, and Mental Barriers to Academia”

Christian Cooper, Lee Ann Demers & Heidi Sanchez

Most Innovative

“Stereotyping and Its Effect on Immigration”

Justin Fleming & Rhyanna Fleming

Most Creative

“Untaming the Mane: Redefining the Limits Placed on Black Hair”

Sarah Cowherd, Tiyee La Mar & Dieulange Wampler

Again, thank you so much for all of your support! And don’t forget…we will be celebrating 50 years of New Start at Homecoming this year!

We're not there yet...please help us spread the word!

Hello donors!

Thank you so much for all of your support! We have one week left and we are almost to the halfway point. But we still have a ways to go. Please be sure to reach out to your friends, family, and colleagues and ask them to support New Start's Academic Conference!

You can also be confident that whatever funds we raise will still end up as scholarships. The amounts may have to be smaller, but every dollar will still end up as financial support for a New Start student.

And, since we're just five days out from the Conference, I wanted to share with you that out of 127 groups, almost 70 of our groups asked to be considered for streaming on Facebook Live! What a great response! During the conference, we will have 8 sessions over the two days - be sure to tune in!

And so without further ado, the 8 groups that will be streamed on Facebook Live are...

What's It Earth: Overpopulation Mario Bustamante, Jordan Torgerson & Benni Delgado

The (In)Visible Woman Morgan Wallace, Kayla Chandler & Sarah Alvarez

Flowers Among the City: Women's Involvement in the Israeli-Palestine Conflict Deanna Kachinosky, Zoë Korban & Emily Quiroz

Untaming the Mane: Redefining the Limits Placed on African-American Hair Sarah Cowherd, Tie La Mar & Dee Dee Wampler

International Borders in Education Citlalli Flores, Vanessa Ley & Dionne Gutierrez

Turning Lemons into Lemonade: Transforming Oppression into Art Nalani Moss, Esta Akoy & Jermaine Davis

Deportation Process vs. Zero Tolerance Lilliana-Juanita Ahkeah, Anthony McNair & Natalie Dallemese

What's Getting Between You and Your Education: The Societal, Physical, and Mental Barriers to Academia Lee Ann Demers, Heidi Sanchez & Christian Cooper

Almost a Third of the Way!

Hello Supporters!

I am so excited to provide this update to you today that we are 31% to our goal! We still have 2 1/2 weeks to get there and so we still need to get the word out. Please share our crowdfunding page widely with your friends and family!

Yesterday was the deadline for our students to submit their full proposals for the conference, and I am more excited than ever! Just check out some of the titles of the sessions they will present:

  • What's Getting Between You and Your Education: The Societal, Physical, and Mental Barriers to Academia
  • Exploring the Mental and Physical Boundaries of Athletes
  • International Borders in Education
  • Music: Transcending Cultures, Boundaries, and Limits
  • Beyond Frybread
  • Prison Reform: Breaking the Cycle and Redefining the Boundaries
  • The (In)Visible Woman
  • Gentrification and the Loss of Cultural Identity
  • Untaming the Mane: Redefining the Limits Placed on African-American Hair
  • Borders and Boundaries: Separation of Families Caused by Regional Borders and Wages

And that's just 10 of the 127 sessions that will happen at the conference! Plus, we have 80 of our 127 groups who have asked to be considered for streaming on Facebook Live. Be sure to check out some of the sessions on July 11-12!

Thank you so much for your support of New Start and our ability to recognize and award academic excellence!

With gratitude,

Good afternoon friends of New Start!

Thank you so much for the support you have shown to New Start and the Academic Conference! Thanks to your gift, we're already 12% to our goal! We still have 27 days left to make it to $9,000. Please spread the word! Want an easy way? Become an Ambassador for our crowdfunding! This will allow you to send out personalized links to others (and keep track of gifts if you're the competitive type...). Email Tom at tam@email.arizona.edu if you are interested!

As the summer progresses, we'll be sharing some updates here about what students are doing in preparation for the conference. This week, students are expected to form their groups of three and work to develop a working title and topic for their panel at the conference. To support their success, the Academic Conference planning committee hosted a workshop on Tuesday and over 200 students attended! That makes us excited about the quality of proposals and presentations we're going to see this year.

Don't forget that you can watch some of the presentations on Facebook Live! July 11-12.

Thank you so much for your support!
