The Border Bridges and Fences Project supports a class field trip for students to the border that would otherwise be financially out of reach for the students. This class is offered at UA’s branch campus, UA South that enrolls transfer students, many of whom are underrepresented and from low socio-economic backgrounds. This two-day field trip will be an intensive immersion capstone experience in a course on Community Psychology and will seek to build bridges over the border wall in our communities of Nogales, and Douglas, AZ. Students will visit with leaders from business, governmental, and community organizations in Nogales, AZ and Sonora, Douglas, AZ and Agua Prieta, Sonora. Dr. Lunsford is teaching the class and will lead the study trip.
The opportunity to experience first hand the border, hear from speakers, and engage with community leaders is invaluable and will prepare students to understand the intersection of social problems, immigration, and border issues in the U.S. and around the world. Many of our students may cross the border but they have not walked it, talked with leaders, nor have they applied the lens of psychology to understand the people living and crossing the border. This experience will enable students to experience course concepts about empowerment, community strengths, and the importance of place. By supporting this project, you will be preparing our future leaders to understand and solve national challenges around border security, immigration, and social justice.
We plan to take the trip in April, 2016 and hope to spend a full day each in two border towns: Nogales and Douglas. We will extend the field trip from last spring, where we learned about border enforcement, met with community organizations such as Community Intervention Associates, and heard from Dr. Mutchler on the history of the border. In addition, we will add meetings with elected officials, such as Mayors of the cities on both sides of the border and have more time to walk both sides of the border fence and visit with the Mexican consulate. Invited speakers will join us at meals and in the evening. It will be an intensive, immersive, learning experience. The ability to stay overnight in these towns helps students understand how border towns differ and to reduce driving if we could only do a day trip.
