Help Take Chemistry "Magic" Shows to Local Classrooms

The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry (CBC) at the University of Arizona is pleased to offer science demonstration "magic" shows to K-12 schools and other community organizations in the Tucson area during the academic year. While our CBC student magicians don’t charge a fee, there is a small cost involved in presenting each show.

Keep the Magic Real

Your support will provide funds needed to keep these shows readily available. Last year, we presented 42 chemistry “magic” shows to Tucson-area K-12 school children, and this year our goal is to increase that number to 50!

Can we count on you to make a gift to support CBC’s educational outreach activities?

The Students Making the Magic

Our CBC student magicians are all members of the University of Arizona's Student Members of the American Chemical Society (ACS) Chapter (aka the Chemistry Club), which was founded in 1973. Their "magic" shows take place in local Tucson schools, at community events like Tucson Festival of Books and a local library that serves underprivileged communities. Twice annually, they invite the Tucson community to come to the U of A campus and watch our hour-long magic show.

Due to their "magic" shows and other community outreach activities, the club has been recognized five times in the last five years at the annual ACS conference as one of the most active clubs in the organization. Highest performing members of the club receive the opportunity to travel to the spring ACS National Meeting free of charge, giving some of our best CBC student magicians the opportunity to network, attend talks, and present a poster at a professional conference.

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Arizona has a long history of engaging our community. In addition to these chemistry “magic” shows, we organize week-long summer science camps, offer tours of our research labs and facilities, and provide public lectures. We love having opportunities to share the amazing world of chemistry with students young and old! To learn more about CBC’s Outreach Programs, visit https://cbc.arizona.edu/outreach.
